Listeriosis neonatal: ¿enfermedad poco frecuente o no diagnosticada? Enfoque microbiológico
Abstract
Listeria monocytogenes es un bacilo Gram positivo con una amplia distribución en la naturaleza, que puede causar enfermedad en el ser humano. El microorganismo tiene la capacidad de sobrevivir dentro de las células fagocíticas que infecta, lo que se considera uno de los principales factores de virulencia. Se ha establecido que en epidemias la principal fuente de infección para el hombre son los alimentos contaminados. Casi todas las infecciones en el adulto ocurren en individuos con algún grado de inmunodeficiencia aunque también se denomina granulomatosis infantil séptica que muestra alta mortalidad. En niños mayores y adultos también produce meningitis. Debido a que la enfermedad se presenta con baja frecuencia y las características clínicas no son específicas, al hacer el diagnóstico por laboratorio, la similitud de la Listeria con otras bacterias en cultivo y en examen directo llevan frecuentemente a establecer un diagnóstico erróneo. Su identificación es simple y fácil de realizar si se tiene la sospecha microbiológica. Este trabajo se ilustra con un caso de listeriosis neonatal que se presentó en el Hospital Universitario del Valle en el mes de julio de 1993 y se hace énfasis en el diagnóstico por laboratorio.Authors
