Revisé personalmente con el Dr. Russell hasta hace poco Jefe de Cirugía del Massachusetts General Hospital y encontramos un tasa de apendicectomías francamente innecesarias de 8.3% (pacientes absolutamente sanos 2.8%, con gastroenteritis 0.9% y otras enfermedades que hacen obvio el error). Si se incluyen algunas enfermedades que pueden justificar el error la tasa de apendicectomía innecesarias se sube hasta alrededor de 15%.
