Based on a random sample of pharmacies in Cali, treatment indicated by lay personnel is checked according to socio-economic strata. The treatment for three simulated diseases is evaluated according to a physician-designed ordinal scale. 94.8% of the personnel indicated treatment, and only 5.2% suggested consulting a physician. The effectiveness of treatment is 18.6% is more significant in the lower strata. Blenorrhea got the highest effectiveness (50.5%), and intestinal amebiasis and bacterial diarrhea got only 3.0% and 3.1%
