Hemo-follicular barrier of the ovary
Main Article Content
The blood follicle barrier is formed by two compartments: vascular and nonvascular. The vascular compartment contains both blood and lymphatic capillaries. The nonvascular one contains the theca interstitial cells, the perifollicular basement lamina, the follicular cells, the zona pellucida, and the lemma.
In this paper, what is known at present about the blood follicle barrier, as well as the permeability characteristics of each structure, are revised.
Understanding the nature of this barrier is essential to the study of ovulation physiology and the follicle's response to gonadotropins and other substances, for example, noxious compounds that may injure the oocyte's normal development.
