This report is related to the frequency with which the dorsal artery of the foot (DAF) is present in some of the Colombian population. The evaluation referred to 2.000 patients by clinical palpation as well as by dissecting 40 human specimens available in the amphitheater.

The artery was absent in only 3.6% of the clinical cases and 3.5% of the postmortem material. In 1.6% of the dissections, the DAF was replaced by a perforant branch of the fibular artery. Additionally, an aberrant course of the DAF was found in 0.8%.

The high frequency of DAF found in this study clinically important since it allows to assess the distal circulation of the lower limb. The rareness of its absence (3.6%) among the Colombian population contrasts traditional statistical data. The DAF provides easier, more elegant, and reliable access when catheterization is required. Additionally, its surgical approach is easier than that of the tibialis posterior artery.
