From January 1st, 1984, to December 31, 1985, at the Hospital Universitario del Valle, Cali, Colombia, 13 cases of acute mesenteric thrombosis were found. The cases are reviewed in terms of age, sex, clinical symptoms, involvement of bowel length, the various etiologies and associated risk factors, and the treatment performed.

Emphasis is made upon the use of an early aggressive selective mesenteric angiography as a diagnostic aid as well as a therapeutic route for administration of intra-arterial vasodilators, i.e., papaverine, as a definite treatment or combined with surgery depending upon the results of angiography.

The most recent concepts in management used nowadays at most American institutions are shown to provide an adequate early detection of this entity and reduce the high mortality rates.
