Problems with low birth weight
Main Article Content
In prospective data collection from 1987 to 1988, twenty-six thousand two hundred and eighty-one newborn babies of the Valle del Cauca, Colombia, were investigated with a standardized clinical history, looking for low birth weight and the risks of being born with it. Eleven point nine percent and 1.8% of the sample could be classified as LBW ans VLBW (<1500g), respectively, They had a high relative risk of low Apgar at one and five minutes and 64 times more risk of developing hyaline membrane disease. The risk of jaundice was 3 times more frequent, and that of presenting congenital anomalies was 1.6 when compared with babies of normal birthweight in the same population. Any perinatal risk program in our community should prioritize the prevention management of LBW.
