From March to June 1984, a transversal study of acute respiratory infections (ARI) was performed in 1299 children from El Diamante, Cali, Colombia, South America. Relationships between the severity of ARI and some variables were studied. There were associations between moderate ARI and 12 and 35 months of age, indoor pollution of the house, especially with oil derivates, family smoking, urine storage, floors and walls of the house, and the number of people in the room.
