The possible relationship between infant suckling and the occurrence of spontaneous ejecto-lactiferous activity (ELA) was studied. Among 132 records of the mammary response to sucking stimulus, only 26 were selected, corresponding to an equal number of women who met rigorous inclusion criteria. We found that ESA was significantly more frequent before than after infant suckling, which reinforces previous suggestions of a neuroendocrine mechanism signaling the preparation of the mammary gland for a new infant suckling. These results suggest that the EEE observed by recording mammary intraductal pressure and the spontaneous milk ejection described clinically by other authors correspond to the same physiological phenomenon.
