Este artículo revisa las aplicaciones de los esteroides en el manejo de la colitis ulcerativa, con énfasis en la budesonida. La budesonida se diseñó para disminuir los efectos adversos, gracias a su alto metabolismo de primer paso por el hígado. El uso tópico de este esteroide es una alternativa en el manejo de los pacientes con colitis ulcerativa distal.
