Abstract
Se presentan los hallazgos etiológicos de 1,000 episodios de infección respiratoria baja (IRAB) estudiados en 340 niños de una cohorte seguida desde el nacimiento hasta los 4 años de edad. La incidencia total fue 1.47 episodios de IRAB por niño/año, y de 4.84 episodios de IRA (alta y baja) por niño/año. Predominaron los virus sobre las bacterias. El virus sincitial respiratorio (VSR) fue el organismo etiológico que se encontró con más frecuencia, seguido por el virus de la parainfluenza tipo III. El agente bacteriano más común fue el Staphylococcus aureus.
