Campylobacter pyloris in gastric mucosa biopsy
Main Article Content
A total of 224 patients suffering different gastric diseases, such as dyspepsia, hematemesis, etc, were assisted at the University Hospital in Cali, Colombia. Gastric biopsies were performed on all of them, looking for Campylobacter pyloris. Biopsies were processed by Warthin Starry and hematoxylin-eosin (HE) stains, and the cultures to isolate the bacterium were done in Columbia agar with sheep's blood. Campylobacter pyloris was found in 77.2% of all patients studied. The bacterium was found in 80.2% of patients with dyspepsia and in 82.3% of patients with gastritis. The atrophic chronic gastritis with intestinal metaplasia had the highest rate (84.5%). An important finding was the association between bacteria and gastric inflammation.
