Epidemiology of HTVL-1 in indigenous people in Colombia
Main Article Content
Between 1989 and 1991, seroepidemiology for HTVL-1 antibodies was studied in different Indian groups from Colombia's southern Andes, Amazonas, Guajira, and Putumayo regions. Ingá, Páez, Kamsá, and Guambiano Indians, as well as mestizos from relatively isolated Andean regions near ti Pasto and Popayán; Ticunas, Witotos, and Mirañas from Amazonas, and Wayús from Guajira at northeastern Colombia, were investigated. Sera were initially tested by agglutination of gelatin particles; the positive ones were reexamined by indirect immunofluorescence. All results were compared with data from Guapi and Timbiquí, 2 small towns located in a well-known HTVL-1 endemic area of the meridional Pacific coast of Colombia.
