Secular trends in epidemiology in Iberian America. Critical Essay

A critical essay on health in liberal America through the centuries is presented. Demographic changes that have occurred since the discovery and their impact on the health of the inhabitants are described. Toe epidemic of smallpox during the conquest and colonial times is highlighted. The evolution of malaria and yellow fever, especially during the colonial and the independence years, is described. The change from the predominance of infectious diseases at the beginning of the present century to that of chronic diseases in recent decades is discussed. Finally, comments are made on the new epidemics: violence, drug addiction, and AIDS.
