The extended family and the family function
Main Article Content
A descriptive study was performed on 166 outpatients of the Center of Basic Care «LaSelva» (ISS), Cali, Colombia, to determine the effects of the cohabitation of the extended family with the nuclear family. A total of 103 (62.1%) women and 63 (37.9%) men were interviewed, with an average age of 35.7 ± 15.9, and were distributed: 27.7% (status 1, 2 of DANE classification) of the low socioeconomic level!; 66.3% (status 3, 4) of the middle socioeconomic leve] and 6.0% (status 5, 6) of the high socioeconomic level. Family dysfunction was observed in 40.3% of the families. It was primarily associated with the existence of more than nine members (OR = 1.60, ci 95%: 1.29-2.05, p < 0.03) in the family and with the presence of the mother-in-law (ÜR= 3.11, ci 95%; 1.69-5.70, p < 0.05). Social support provided by friends was perceived as insufficient in 35% of the cases, and it was associated with family dysfunction (OR= 3.58, ci 95%: 1.77-7.23, p < 0.0001). The observed data confirm that psychosocial risk results from the stressors and the social support existing within a family.
