From January 1988 to September 1990, 1,617 pregnant women attended health centers in Armenia, Quindío, and Colombia. An indirect immunofluorescence antibody technique for IgG anti-toxoplasma was used. It was found 63.3% of sero-positivity, which was greater with risk factors: 67. 7% when cat contact was detected, 73.6% if the contact was close (P<0.002), and 75% when eating not well-done meat. The high prevalence found and regression analyses regarding age pointed out the acquisition of the infection in infancy in most of this population. The incidence of acquired toxoplasmosis during pregnancy was 1.3% (12 cases in 896 pregnancies with a proper follow-up). Public health measures are required to decrease the infection rate, including education and diagnostic programs during pregnancy.
