Interpretation and analysis of arterial and venous gases represent a valuable help to handle critically ill patients in the intensive care unit. Samples must be taken with precaution and knowledge; for instance, the speed for obtaining samples of arterial blood differs when venous blood is obtained from the pulmonary artery or the atrium. Before making any interpretation, it is necessary to verify the reliability of the sample. Studying arterial and venous gases makes it possible to assess five body functions: ventilation, oxygenation, acid-base balance, tissue perfusion, and metabolism. Through these measurements and when results have been analyzed, it is possible to obtain a certain knowledge of the organism's functioning, which shows ways and behaviors to be followed with a critica] patient.
