The orthostatic test is proposed to be used as a routine method to assess work capacity. In a first attempt to learn how to interpret the test results, the test was performed on 83 young subjects. Of 41 males, 24 were classified as athletic and 17 as sedentary; of 42 females, 21 were in each class. Analysis of variance showed effects of habitual activity level and sex on heart rate measured in subjects lying down and standing. In both cases, the heart rates of the women were higher than those of the men, and the heart rates of the athletes were lower than those of the sedentary subjects. As no significant differences were found between the frequencies in decubitus and standing, the data of the sedentary men were compared with those of a group of professional soccer players. The results show that in the athletes, when standing up, the increase in heart rate is significantly lower than in the sedentary, thus diluting some doubts about the validity of the method to establish physical capacity in the Colombian environment
