El virus linfotrópico de células T del adulto tipo 1 (HI1, V -1) fue el primer retrovirus patógeno humano aislado1•3 y se aso-cia con enfermedades como la leucemia-linfoma de células T del adulto (ATL)4.5 y con la paraparesia espástica tropical (PET) en Martinica6, y en la costa del Pacífico colombiano7, así como en el sur de Japón, donde se la denominó mielo-patía asociada con el HTL V-1 [HTL V -1 associated myelo-pathy (HAM)]8•
